Upstate New York Robot Battle - V
April 14, 2007
Syracuse, NY

The Upstate NY Robot Battle is a combat robot event for small robots, hosted each year by the UNYRCC. It is held at the huge Carousel Center in Syracuse, NY.

After hearing about this event, I decided to try my skills at building and competing with a 3 pound robot, and the results were spectacular... Aggravator certainly lived up to it's name, it ended up going undefeated and winning the event!

The following is a short synapsis of the event...

My dad and I left here around 5AM Saturday morning. We stopped along the way for breakfast and ended up arriving at the Carousel Center around 9:30 AM. After getting our pit table set up and batteries peaked, I got Aggravator prepared for inspection. The bot weighed worked great... after I plugged in a speed control which came loose from the receiver! Aggravator weighed in with a battle-ready weight of 2.89 pounds.

First round I was paired against a robot called "First Round Bye". FRB's was literally made from a phone... the phone base being the robot's bottom and a cordless telephone that spins as the weapon. (See the video if you don't believe me!!!) This match resulted in a knockout win for Aggravator. I pushed him around and pinned him in the corner and then he lost movement. FRB was built by team Real Men of Genius from Massachusettes.

Second round I battled the solid lifter bot "UpTech". This was a good fought match by two strong robots. Several times I got underneath UpTech and slammed him into the arena walls. My aggression resulted in Aggravator winning by judge's decision. UpTech is built by Ron of team Fishnecks.

Third round I had the luck of fighting the #7 ranked beetle "Ripblade". Ripblade has a real mean heavy spinning undercutter blade. At the beginning of the match he got one good smack to the front of Aggravator, but the rest of the match was all in Aggravator's favor. I kept close so he couldn't spin up his blade and simply pushed him around and pinned him a few times in the corners. This match was awarded to Aggravator by judge's decision. Ripblade is built by Justin of team Sawzall.

In the tounament final I had to once again battle UpTech. He fought his way back in the loser bracket by aggressivly beating BE1, Busterblade, and Ripblade (the 3 most destructive bots at the event!). I knew I had my work cut out, but I drove amazingly. Thoughout the match I repeatedly slammed and rammed UpTech into the walls. Once I even hit UpTech so hard that it flipped me over. I drove just as aggressive upside down and won the match (and event!) by judge's decision.

Great job to the many great robots at this event. Many people think this event is just for lousy robots... That was definitely not the case! The beetleweight class was full of big bladed bots which did their fair share of damage (to other bots, the arena, and themselves!). Luckilly for me, Ripblade and BE1 pretty much destroyed each other early on. The ants also put on a good show. Switchblade and Firemoth did a great job of making pieces of other bots fly!

Congrats to Ron of team Fishneck on his performance with UpTech. Also to Justin of team Sawzall for sweeping the ant class and winning the rumble. Also congrats to team Basenji and BusterBlade on winning the rumble and literally destroying BE1 in the process!

I had an awesome time and I really got to meet a lot of people and make some new friends. The audience was really entertained and John's announcing was often quite comical! Winning this event was just "icing on the cake," so to speak. Aggravator will probably have some minor improvements, but will pretty much remain the same for it's next event. I got many compliments about Aggravator's design and my driving. Thanks to all the people who were cheering for Aggravator, it certainly is an entertaining robot to watch!

Thanks so much to the entire Upstate NY Robot Combat Club for hosting this fun event; especially to both John and Justin for all the hard work they put into this tournament, and it really shows! EVERYONE had a good time and I definitely will be back next year.

We are considering attendind the H.O.R.D. event next month in Ohio. I will probably take Aggravator and possibly build an antweight! I'll keep you posted!
